Exploring the Isle of Lewis in a Land Rover D90 with Flora the Westie
Some adventures call for a rugged ride, a trusty companion, and a destination that feels like a world away. Enter the Isle of Lewis, our Land Rover D90, and Flora the Westie—small in size, but big on attitude. Starting with a ferry ride from Ullapool to Stornoway, we set off to discover beaches, breweries, and all the good vibes the Outer Hebrides have to offer.
Here’s how to hit up the best spots on Lewis and Harris, with a route that’s as smooth as it gets on island roads.
Stornoway to Point
First stop: Point, a laid-back peninsula just outside Stornoway. It’s got chill vibes, killer views, and enough space for Flora to stretch her paws.
Pro Tip: If you’re feeling peckish, swing back to Stornoway for a bite at Stornoway Distillers at The Fank
Bayble Beach
Next up, Bayble Beach. It’s quiet, it’s beautiful, and it’s the kind of spot where time slows down. Flora went full zoomies here, and we just soaked up the chill atmosphere.
Snack Stop: Pop into The Boatshed Restaurant near Stornoway for some Hebridean comfort food—it’s a local favorite, and for good reason.
Garry Beach and Tolsta Beach
Now things get dramatic. Garry Beach is pure cinematic gold with sea stacks that look like they belong in a fantasy film. A short drive north lands you at Tolsta Beach, where the golden sands stretch on forever. Perfect for a windswept wander.
Cool Detail: There’s an old bridge near Garry Beach that feels like stepping back in time. Snap a pic, then head down to the shore.
Port of Ness
Driving to the very tip of Lewis, you hit Port of Ness, a sleepy fishing village with serious charm. The harbor here is postcard-perfect, and the beach isn’t too shabby either. Flora was particularly impressed by the sea breeze.
Food Tip: Stop by The Wobbly Dog for hearty pub grub. It’s got a quirky vibe, and the food is top-notch.
Tarbert (Isle of Harris)
Cruising south, you’ll hit Tarbert, the main hub of Harris. It’s the kind of place where everyone’s got a smile for you. Stock up on local goodies like Harris Tweed or grab a coffee and watch the world go by.
Don’t Miss: Swing by Uig Sands Restaurant nearby for epic food with even better views.
Leverburgh (Shoutout to the Brewery!)
What’s better than an epic road trip? An epic road trip with craft beer. The Isle of Harris Brewery in Leverburgh is the kind of spot you want to kick back in. We tried a couple of their brews, and let’s just say the souvenir bottles didn’t make it home. Shout-out to husband-and-wife team Nick and Anna Helfrich, along with their dog, Spud for the hospitality!
Quick Tip: If you’re hungry, the brewery’s got you covered with local eats that hit the spot.
Rodel
The perfect finale: Rodel, home to St. Clement’s Church, an ancient building surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery. It’s peaceful, it’s historic, and it’s the kind of place that makes you take a deep breath and just appreciate life.
Fun Fact: The carvings inside the church are some of the best-preserved medieval art in Scotland. History buffs, this one’s for you.
Why the D90?
This island wasn’t made for city cars. The D90 handled everything we threw at it—bumpy roads, sandy tracks, and the occasional overly curious sheep. Plus, with Flora riding shotgun, it felt like a proper adventure-mobile.
Pro Tips for Your Lewis & Harris Adventure:
Ferry First: Book that Ullapool-Stornoway ferry early. Trust us, you don’t want to miss out.
Dress for the Weather: The Hebrides do whatever they want when it comes to weather. Layers are your best friend.
Eat Local: Fresh seafood, Stornoway black pudding, and craft beer—your taste buds will thank you.
